SAMANTHA BUCKWALTER-ADJUDICATOR/INSTRUCTOR
Music and dancing have surrounded Samantha her entire life. Being the daughter of Kelly (Buckwalter) Casanova, meant that every week she was tagging along to dances and workshops, doing her homework and playing her gameboy, while her mother worked to support the both of them. Halls, studios, and conventions became her playgrounds. It wasn’t until she was 10 years old and attended her mother’s convention, Swingbreak, that she actually wanted to learn what her mother did. It was at this event that she saw Jordan Frisbee and Jessica Cox perform a Junior routine and from that point on she wanted to be a dancer.
Samantha began competing in 2001 and traveling to more events out of state with her mother. She danced her first Juniors routine at the US Open with Ben Morris in 2002 and the following year with Rickey Andrade in 2003. At the time dancing was still a hobby as her passion was focused on martial arts. She was the youngest in her dojo to receive 1st dan (Black belt level) at 16. Her teaching career began at her dojo as she taught classes there to children and adults of all ages for 6 years.
Samantha had no intention of teaching or pursuing West Coast Swing as a career until 2006 at Capital Swing. It was there that she saw Kyle Redd and Sarah Van Drake perform their “How long can a fool go wrong” routine and truly fell in love with the dance. From that point on she began mentoring under her mother, assisting her classes and shadowing her as a judge to learn everything and anything she could about the dance. Samantha worked diligently to earn her points in every division up from the Junior, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and AllStar divisions to her current position competing with the top Champion dancers around the world.
Starting in 2007, Samantha was fortunate to study under Mario Robau Jr. She assisted him in workshops and intensives both in the US and abroad which she credits to her confident teaching foundation. During 2009-2010 Samantha was presented a once in a life time opportunity by her dear friend, Mike Rosa, to re-locate to London. It was there that she taught weekly classes, workshops, and events all over the UK and Europe in an effort to help the Swing community grow. After her adventures in Europe, Samantha was convinced by her brand new friend at the time, Malia San Nicoles, to move to Southern California, which is where she now calls home. Samantha was inducted into the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame in 2012 and, most recently in 2022. She continues to travel all over the world competing, coaching, and teaching with her partner Matt Richey.
One of Samantha’s proudest moments was becoming the first woman to final in a Champion’s division as a Leader, thanks to the help of Jennifer Deluca. From her very first dance lesson, Samantha’s mother taught her to lead and follow at the same time. This skill not only benefited Samantha’s teaching ability but also allowed her to be a role model to so many dancers wishing to learn the opposite role. Samantha and her mother are proud to support the movement in the West Coast Swing community to allow anyone to learn and compete in any role they so choose.
PHOENIX GREY-ADJUDICATOR/INSTURCTOR/DJ
Growing up watching music videos in the 90's, Phoenix found an early interest and in the world of dance which eventually culminated in teaching himself the choreography to Michael Jackson's Thriller, then training his friends to dance alongside him in a high school talent show.
In 2010, Phoenix discovered West Coast Swing, and a new life passion in partner dancing. From there, he began his professional dance training by exploring every style he could get his hands on: Ballroom, Salsa, Blues, Argentine Tango.... but Swing remains his first and greatest love.
Phoenix knew early on that he enjoys following even more than leading, which has spurred him to train and excel in both roles. His passion for following lead him to create the Facebook group "Degendering West Coast Swing", a community of dancers interested in promoting the acceptance and encouragement of gender neutral dancing (eg. anyone can lead or follow, regardless of gender). The community's efforts have collectively gotten the rules changed to allow nontraditional dancers both dance and be recognized in West Coast Swing's primary competitive format. Since the rule change, Phoenix is among the first in the world to achieve a dual "All-Star" competitive ranking both as a lead and as a follow.
His advocacy for gender neutral dancing is still going strong, and he is proud to see how much progress has come from the last few years. He now spends 1-2 weekends a month travelling, teaching, competing, DJing, and judging. Dancing is his light in life, and he's eager to share that light with the world.

JONNO LIBERMAN-INSTRUCTOR

And when he moved to San Francisco, he stumbled upon line dancing at the Sundance Saloon. It was like a match made in dance heaven.
Before you knew it, Jonno was creating his own line dances that were winning awards left and right. His dances are so popular that they're being taught all over the world. And with names like "Lite After Love", "She's a Natural", and "Bambalam", you know these dances are going to be fun and funky.
But the best thing about Jonno is his infectious joy.

NICOLAS RAEL-ACDA EVENT DIRECTOR
Nicolás is a true dance connoisseur, a master of his craft, and a vibrant spirit that fills the room with joy and energy. His journey with partner dancing began over two decades ago, in the heart of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was here that he discovered the beauty and excitement of Ballroom and Latin dance, and quickly fell head over heels for the sport.
Nicolás embodies the power of dedication and hard work, becoming a fully certified dance instructor at Fred Astaire Dance Studios under the guidance of national examiner Jennifer McCalla.
With a passion for absorbing as many different styles as possible, Nicolás underwent private training from a wide range of experts, including the likes of Eddie Simon, Jose Decamps, Bob Powers, and Julia Gorchakova, to name but a few. His dedication and hard work paid off, as he was awarded top teacher accolades at a host of prestigious events, including DVIDA National championships, Dancing A La Carte, New England Open, and the New Mexico Dance Fiesta.
But Nicolás' love for dance was not limited to the competitive arena. In the early 2000s, he discovered the joy of country dance events, and in particular, open role dancing. It was a revelation that brought even more happiness and excitement into his life, spurring him on to create his own event, the Rio Grande Dance Classic.
This independent event quickly became a shining star on the dance calendar, open to all styles of partner dance and drawing crowds from far and wide. When approached by the ACDA, Nicolás was more than happy to become a part of the organization, proud to have the Rio Grande Dance Classic as a member of a fun and loving dance family.
Nicolás is not just a dancer, but a true ambassador for the art of partner dancing. His infectious enthusiasm and heartfelt dedication have touched the lives of countless people, inspiring them to take up dance and experience the sheer joy and excitement that it brings. He is a true testament to the power of dance to transform lives and bring people together, and we are proud to call him one of our own.
